29/10/24
If you are looking for a spooky adventure this Halloween, this one is for you!
Did you know there are over 1500 castles across the UK, and many of them come with ghostly tales....
We’ve highlighted our favourite five below – would they make your list of spooky spots?
Chillingham Castle, Northumberland
Chillingham Castle takes the top spot. This medieval castle which dates back to the 12th century, played a part in border conflicts and was visited by Royals. But what draws visitors now is its reputation for paranormal activity.
Among the ghosts is The White Pantry Ghost who begs for water, suggesting she may have been poisoned. There are also reports of men’s voices echoing through the chapel, although they are never seen.
For those who are intrigued, the castle holds ghost tours and hunts, making this the perfect Halloween activity.
Tulloch Castle, Dingwall
Tulloch Castle, located in Dingwall town in the Highlands of Scotland, comes in second on our spooky list. Built in the 12th century, this historic castle is best known for sightings of The Green Lady, a ghost who has been caught on camera. There have been reports from visitors experiencing ice cold chills whilst walking through the castle’s rooms and corridors.
If you do dare to visit the castle this Halloween, make sure you take your camera.
Treasurer’s House, North Yorkshire
Treasurer’s House in North Yorkshire has one of the highest number of ‘Ghost’ mentions in TripAdvisor reviews. The former owner, George Aislaby, is said to haunt the premises, but he isn’t the only one. Roman Soldiers have also reportedly been seen roaming the cellars and are said to be missing the lower parts of their legs, adding to the mystery of this haunted house.
This is a must-visit if you are interested in ghost stories.
Craig y Nos Castle, Swansea
Overlooking the Brecon Beacons National Park, the Craig y Nos Castle is a Victorian-Gothic estate that was once a tuberculosis hospital. Today, it is considered the most haunted castle in Wales, drawing visitors for its ghost tours and paranormal investigations.
Featured on TV shows like Most Haunted, this castle offers ghost tours, and even stay the night if you are brave enough.
Alnwick Castle, Northumberland
Alnwick Castle takes the fifth spot in the list - though famous for its features in Downtown Abbey and Harry Potter, this castle has spooked out plenty of its visitors.
Many eerie encounters have been reported, particularly with The Grey Lady who floats through the corridors and passages under the castle. There are also legends of Alnwick the vampire who is believed to be responsible for unexplained supernatural activities.
If you are looking for a Halloween Castle tour, these should be on your list. The question is, are you brave enough?
