As a time for sharing moments with loved ones and spending quality time with the family, Christmas wouldn’t be complete without… scanning the TV guide and picking out the must-see shows! Here are our top TV picks over the festive season to help you get started.

Arthur Christmas

If your more bah humbug than festive cheer, Arthur Christmas, airing on Christmas Day will certainly turn you into a Christmas movie convert! Featuring the voices of James McAvoy, Bill Nighy and Ashley Jensen, this festive premiere is not to be missed on your Christmas evening.

Strictly Come Dancing

Oh we love a bit of sparkle over Christmas! With everything to play for, the final contestants will take to the dance floor to see who can wear the outfit with the most sequins on 20th December. The Christmas Day special embraces a panto theme and appearances from previous contestants. It’s set to be comedy gold as Scott Mills returns to perform his favourite dance. (Fingers crossed for the crab costume).

Downton Abbey

It wouldn’t be Christmas day without a Downton Abbey drama on the cards. Clips from the episode have sneakily teased us with “secrets” and surprise visitors that truly throw a spanner in the works. A cheery welcome escape from the afternoon post-turkey snooze, the Christmas special is set to create some happier memories this year for avid viewers.

We’ve grouped these together as Christmas Day seems to be a beacon for tragedy across soap land in Albert Square, Coronation Street and down on the farm in Emmerdale. With each of the soaps compete for those early-evening ratings by creating unbelievable scenes of anguish, star performances from each cast will have you gripped through their festive explosive episodes.

Gogglebox 2014

Tune in on Christmas Eve at 9:30pm for the best clips from the nation’s favourite couch potatoes, as Channel 4 take a look back at classic episodes and corking comments from the likes of Steph and Dom and June and Leon. A hilarious treat not to be missed, you can see from the clip why these real-life “characters” are celebrities in their own right.

Birds of a Feather

After exhausting your sparkly new presents and seriously over eating, share a moment with your Birds of a Feather friends Sharon, Tracey and Dorien as they reunite for this festive special. The ladies get together after Christmas for a trip to the Canary Islands and hilarious consequences.

Surprise Surprise Christmas Special

Holly Willoughby makes a seasonal return to TV with a Christmas Surprise Surprise special. Warming the cockles of your heart, the touching stories and comedy helpers like Ben Stiller and Ricky Gervais will give you that warm and fuzzy yuletide feeling. Witness emotional reunions whilst taking a minute to realise just how lucky you really are.

So cosy up on the couch as a family for some yuletide viewing that will make you feel full of comfort and joy (and possibly food). Who knows, if you manage to watch the above programmes, you might even be lucky enough to catch our new tombola ad, which will be aired during many of the commercial breaks! What will you be watching this festive period?
