Friday 20th March marks the International Day of Happiness, and here at the tombola towers we’ve been discussing all the little things that make us happy. A common theme amongst many of us is that listening to mood boosting songs and devising uplifting playlists really keeps our spirits high.
As part of National Happiness Day, we asked several bloggers to get involved and tell us exactly which song got them smiling and the reason behind their good mood anthems.
Shake it Off – Taylor Swift
Tara Cain from The Sticky Fingers Blog explained that her happy song often involved a family sing along: “Shake it Off is one of those songs that we play in the car with the kids. We all break into song, as well as doing our own car seat dance. It gives us all such a happy buzz.”
Three Little Birds – Bob Marley
“This song reminds me of sunshine, an incredible holiday in Australia and how life is far too short and precious to spend it worrying! More often than not, everything does usually turn out ok, and this song helps you to focus on that,” commented Katie Portman of Pouting in Heels.
No Angels – Bastille ft. Ella Eyre
This Bastille remix of TLC’s No Scrubs brings back great memories for Clare Potts from I Like Tweet: “not only is this a cover of one of the best songs ever (in my opinion), it also reminds me of when me and my boyfriend started seeing each other, spending all night dancing around the living room to this and Angie Stone!”
Mr Blue Sky – ELO
Lauren from Belle Du Brighton chose her happy song as a reminder of her wedding: “I had a church wedding, and we picked the song to walk out of the church to, so whenever I hear it I beam! People were surprised by our choice, but it made everyone smile, especially the older guests who had been around when it was released.”
Alright – Supergrass
This British nineties anthem was top of the list for Sonya Cisco of RocknRollMum: “Alright reminds me of my last child-free summer. Every time I hear it, it evokes the smell of freshly cut grass and the taste of ice cold cider on a hot day. The simple pleasures in life!”
Firework – Katy Perry
The Curved Opinion author, Victoria Frankland, focused on how inspiring songs can be, “Music is such a powerful tool as it has the ability to change your mood in an instant. Listening to this song makes me feel like I can conquer the world!”
Someone to call my lover – Janet Jackson
Vicki, also known as The Magpie Girl, opted for this classic Janet Jackson melody for her happy playlist song: “The opening guitar strings instantly transport me to another place, making me happy, relaxed and feeling like summer is in the air. The video shows Janet singing in an open top car on a road trip, and I’d love to do that. How amazing would it be to drive a convertible across America?!”
Digital Love – Daft Punk
Medicated Follower of Fashion author, Alex, opted for Daft Punk’s 2001 hit: “This album was permanently on repeat for me in 2000 and 2001, usually on my Friday night playlist whilst getting ready and having a few drinks! My husband and I are both big fans, so it’s memorable for us both and always gets us smiling.”
I Believe in a Thing Called Love – The Darkness
Jessica at Feeling Stylish selected her feel-good song based on friends and fun experiences: “This song is upbeat with a hint of silliness, and an amazing guitar solo. It conjures up memories of great times with amazing people. I can’t help but smile whenever I hear it.”
Crazy in Love – Beyonce
Erica, author of Being Erica, was enthused by this dancefloor classic featuring Queen Bey and Jay Z: “Whenever I hear that ‘uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, oh no no!’ I just get so happy. I was about 18 or so when it came out, and it was one of those songs you’d always hear when you were out dancing. Now I just get pure nostalgia! It’s certainly not something I’d choose to listen to all the time, but I can’t help but have it as my guilty pleasure.”
I’d Rather Be – Clean Bandit
As the weather warms up, Sarah from Temporary:Secretary turned her thoughts to summer for her International Happiness Day song: “It reminds me of summertime. Whenever it’s being played on the radio, I can’t help but bop along! It’s a simple catchy track, so I’m sure I’ll never get sick of this song!”
