A North East man has shunned the nine to five and has taken his job – and his life – into his campervan and off to Europe.
Gary Finnegan has even sold his flat in Washington, Tyne and Wear to help fund his passion for touring the continent and his Sunderland-based employers say he can keep his job.
The 48 year old chat moderator for tombola.co.uk, one of the UK’s most popular online bingo sites, says he loved his job so much that he was willing to do all the necessary adaptations to his campervan to ensure he could still put in his shifts overseeing the players on the site.
Gary has spent more than £12,000 making his campervan his permanent residence, and now has added all the necessary technological advances to ensure he can still work for tombola.co.uk, regardless of whether he’s in Seville, Stockholm…or Sunderland.
The father of three said: “I know some people might view this as slightly odd, but I love travelling across Europe and tombola has been great in allowing me to carry on doing the job I love doing for them.
“So many go to work and do the regular nine to five thing and view the same four walls day in, day out. I consider myself really lucky to be able to chose whatever view I want from my own ‘office’ on whatever day I choose.”
He’s already driven across Europe several times and counts Venice and the Austrian Tyrol among his favourite places. He’s leaving these shores again in a few weeks time and is planning to be away for up to six months this time.
His manager at tombola.co.uk, Customer Relationship Manager, Susanne Kennedy says: “Gary is one of the most popular chat moderators with our players on tombola, so we were glad to be able to accommodate his wishes of working from wherever he is in his beloved campervan. Such are his modifications to the van, that it’s become quite a talking point in the office.
“The beauty of being a chat moderator with us is that you really can do it from anywhere, provided you have a computer and broadband connection. Its the perfect job for someone who may want to work from home, or in Gary’s case from the Austrian mountain tops!”
Gary, who has been with tombola.co.uk for more than two years, says he loves the family feel of working online with bingo players from all over the UK and says he feels very lucky to be able to combine his love for travelling with keeping his job here in the UK.
