Congratulations to Amal Alamuddin and George Clooney, who married in Venice at the weekend. We’ve had some high-profile weddings over the last few years: Kate and Wills, Kim and Kanye, Brad and Angelina. This one has drawn plenty of attention, partly because up until now the groom has been Hollywood’s most famous bachelor, and partly because the new Mrs George Clooney is as clever as she is beautiful. Amal Alamuddin, a human rights barrister, is one of the UK’s brightest legal brains.
A look at George Clooney’s chequered dating history goes to show: sometimes, you just have to keep looking until you find ‘The One’…
Kelly Preston, 1987
George met Kelly at acting school, and the pair lived together throughout much of their relationship. George even bought Kelly a potbellied pig, which they named Max. When the pair split in 1989 he continued looking after the pig, despite the mixed opinions of those around him.
“I’ve had different reactions over the years,” Clooney said. “But I always say, ‘Love me, love my pig.’ What can I do?”
Talia Balsam, 1989
The pair originally started dating in 1984, when George was only 23 years young, but broke up three years later, before he met Kelly Preston. In 1989 they rekindled their relationship and were wed in Las Vegas by an Elvis impersonator, with just Talia’s mother and a few of their close friends in attendance. Unfortunately, the marriage fell apart in 1993 and they filed for divorce, a circumstance that George largely blames on himself:
“I married a terrific girl. That it didn’t work out was mostly my fault.”
Kimberly Russell, 1995
George met Kimberley on the LA social scene and they dated for around ten months. The split came shortly after George starred in TV drama ER, due to his new-found fame and purported commitment phobia. When asked about their relationship breakdown, Kimberley said:
“You have to enjoy the ride while it lasts — he’s simply not the marrying kind. The guy is an absolute charmer, but just don’t mention the words ‘marriage, commitment or babies.’”
Karen Duffy, 1996
Short but sweet, the relationship between Karen and George lasted all of a few weeks. Nevertheless, the pair made quite a few public appearances together, including an appearance at the Emmys in 1995. It seems that Max was an unwelcomed third wheel, however:
“I could never fall in love with a man with a pet pig, and George’s pig is disgusting.”
Celine Balitran, 1996
Far removed from Hollywood glamour, Celine Balitran was a French law student who met George when she waited on him at a table in France in 1996. The couple stayed together for three years, which saw Celine move to California to live with George before they split in 1999.
Lisa Snowdon, 2000
The pair allegedly met whilst shooting a Martini advert in 2000, when they began an on-again, off-again relationship lasting a total of five years. George’s fame was said to cause friction between the pair, however, and they split in 2005.
Lisa has since said:
“I’m always going to be George Clooney’s ex… I sometimes think it will be written on my tombstone.”
Krista Allen, 2002
Having both met on the set of Confessions of a Dangerous Mind in 2002, the pair were on-again, off-again over the course of four years, before they finally called it a day in 2006.
Sarah Larson, 2007
Sarah Larson was a waitress in Las Vegas when she began dating the star in 2007. The pair had a lucky escape when George’s motorbike, with Sarah riding pillion, was clipped by a car. The couple stayed together for a few months following the accident, before splitting up in 2008.
Elisabetta Canalis, 2009
Of course, Sarah wasn’t the last person to take a ride on George Clooney’s motorbike; Italian model and MTV presenter Elisabetta Canalis was spotted riding pillion in July 2009.
Elisabetta described George as “one of the best people [she has] met from a charitable point of view.” More recently, however, she commented:
“Between us there was more of a father-daughter relationship. I was unable to clarify this up ’til now.”
Stacy Keibler, 2011
In 2011 George whisked the actress, model and former professional wrestler, Stacy Keibler, off to his Lake Como home. The relationship lasted two years before the pair split in 2013, which, according to tabloid rumours, was because they “wanted different things in life” – with Stacy keen to start a family.
It may well be that George’s tune has changed since meeting Amal Alamuddin. Having already said, however, that he wouldn’t be getting married again after divorcing Talia in 1993, it might just be that children are another thing that George has changed his stance on. Only time will tell…
