From 2005, photographer Michael Hess spent four years travelling around the UK photographing bingo halls with writer Maxine Gallagher. His book ‘Bingo & Social Club’, along with showcasing his tremendous photographic skill, acts as pretty solid photojournalistic documentation of what many may term a ‘by-gone era’. However, while bingo clubs are in decline, online bingo continues to be extremely popular – the game of bingo is far from ‘by-gone’! Hess’s photography gives an interesting insight into the social life of bingo halls, but we wanted to find out more about what he thought about the relationship between the ‘online’ and ‘offline’ bingo worlds, so we gave him a call. This article examines his book and our discussion.
